Introduction
This award recognises the additional skills required to deal with the specific hazards associated with an HPC night drive. The ability to drive with utmost safety and consideration to other road users during the hours of darkness or reduced visibility is an essential requisite of the HPC driver. The entry level standard skills and competencies should be in place and practised.Competencies
- Ability to drive within the limits of vision
- Ability to use lights effectively
- Ability to judge the impact of factors that may affect a night drive
Demonstration
- The driver always drives within the limit of visibility, adjusting speed for either dipped or high beams, and always able to stop within the field of forward vision.
- The driver uses all observation clues to assist the driving plan, including reflected light from oncoming traffic, illuminated road markings and signage, and the lights of other vehicles.
- The main and dipped beams are always used in a timely manner to avoid dazzling other road users whilst providing optimum view ahead.
- The driver displays heightened self awareness and monitors concentration levels, fatigue and eye strain.
Training and Assessment Process
Training
There is no restriction to the sources of coaching or instruction a member may use to prepare for the Silver award assessment.
Assessment
To protect the credibility of the required standard all assessment will be restricted to approved coaches, as advised by the DSC.
The approved coach will submit the assessment sheet and recommendation for the Silver Award to the DSC who will then communicate the award to the member.
